El día de la Fiesta Nacional se celebra, desde 1983, el 6 de junio, día en que Gustavo Vasa fue elegido rey en 1523. En 1809, ese mismo día, se aprobó una nueva Constitución. La iniciativa de convertir esa fecha en el día de la Fiesta Nacional partió originalmente de Artur Hazelius, fundador del museo al aire libre de Skansen, en Estocolmo.
